Second Amendment assault continues amid gun purchase boom

Americans are certainly being hurt by the Obama economy but one industry continues to boom. According to David Sherfinski at the Washington Times:

Gun records checks, fueled by a post-Newtown boom of gun sales, hit a new high in 2013, and industry analysts expect ammunition to be the big seller this year as consumers catch up to all of those firearms purchases. More than 21 million applications were run through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System last year, marking nearly an 8 percent increase and the 11th straight year that the number has risen.

In an interesting coincidence, this report came out as a federal judge was ruling against Chicago’s ordinance banning the sale of firearms within city limits. According to the Chicago Tribune, U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang said:

“Chicago’s ordinance goes too far in outright banning legal buyers and legal dealers from engaging in lawful acquisitions and lawful sales of firearms, and at the same time the evidence does not support that the complete ban sufficiently furthers the purposes the ordinance tries to serve.”

Perhaps Chicago-style politics were at play? BizPac Review says:

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wrote letters to Bank of America and TD Bank a year ago, asking them to cut off any business dealings with gun manufacturers. He hoped to force the weapons companies into supporting restrictive gun control measures. At the time, Smith & Wesson had a $60 million line of credit with TD Bank, and Sturm, Ruger & Co. had a $25 million line of credit with Bank of America.

Chicago is known for having the highest murder rate in the country despite, or because of, its strict gun control laws. Without a doubt, a principle goal of the progressive socialists is the disarming of the American people. There will also be no doubt that the decision by Judge Chang in the city of Obama will draw the ire of the presidet and his liberal progressive disciples. One can certainly expect a challenge to Judge Chang’s ruling.

With the setbacks the Left continues to experience when confronting gun rights, such as the successful recall election of liberal Democrat Senators in Colorado, expect a renewed effort from liberals.

The economy may be struggling in some areas but,

“2013 was the best year for firearm sales (commercial, domestic) in history — period! That’s true for NH to Hawaii,” said Richard Feldman, president of the Independent Firearm Owners Association in Rindge, N.H. “Ruger alone sold well over one million guns this year.”

Feldman expects the next surge to be in bullets, saying “Ammunition will still be very strong in 2014 as it hasn’t caught up nationally with the demand.”

As we’ve reported previously, EPA regulations on primary lead smelters will ultimately put pressure on lead supplies and therefore ammunition production. As primary lead production closes down (a loss of some 130,000 tons), secondary means become primary. If supply can’t keep up with demand, we’ll have a deficit — and what good is a firearm without ammunition?

There is still the issue of background checks, but a measure proposed by Senators Toomey (R-Pa) and Manchin (D-WVa) was defeated last year. However, the Obama administration is still taking steps to encourage states to post more data about mentally ill residents to the national system. Two not-so -trustworthy departments, Justice and Health and Human Services are working to clarify who is prohibited from gun ownership because of mental health issues and a regulation to help states submit more information on people for the national background check system.

Of course my concern – which might be yours too – is will the DOJ and HHS try to define who is and who is not mentally capable of purchasing a firearm? I recall the DHS under Janet Napolitano proposed putting recent combat veterans on some sort of national watch list.

The fight for the Second Amendment is not over and will not be until we rid the federal government control by progressive socialists. Two quotes to remember:

“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” (Thomas Jefferson)

“An armed man is a citizen. A disarmed man is a subject.” (Yours Truly)

  1. I have no problem at all with making sure that the mentally ill are precluded from possessing firearms. Of course the left will be foisted upon their own petard with this one. You see, liberalism has been classified as a mental illness. http://www.amazon.com/The-Liberal-Mind-Psychological-Political/dp/0977956318 I have no problem with illegal drug users, liberals and the other assorted dregs of society being barred from owning arms. Unfortunately for liberals, this will make it open season on them as criminals will continue to ignore any & all gun laws. Having an Obama sticker on your car will soon serve a dual purpose. It will continue to show everyone how stupid you are, and it will let criminals know you’re ripe for the picking. Sorry about your luck….losers.

    • Yes he was a appointee of Obama, Glad he followed the constitution with his ruling , vs making a ruling using politics, though the Judge could have gone farther and chose not to which was a disappointment.

  2. I don’t believe for one second that these gun purchases, as well as ammo purchases are being made by the general public…I believe these purchases are being made by government agents, using tax dollars, to deplete the availability of guns and ammo to the general public. I live in a rural area where no one has been able to get specific rounds of ammo, because when our local Walmart gets a shipment in, a man comes in and buys it all up as soon as the store opens. This has been happening regularly for over the past 5 years.I don’t believe the general American public is as well armed as the government owned media would like to have us believe. They are using OUR own money to deprive us of our right to keep and bear arms.

  3. The good Mr. Sherfinski, over at the Washington Times, make the perfect argument that the background check system is working as intended and there is no need for further amendments or legislation – just like the myriad other current gun control legislation like: straw man purchase, felon possession, interstate transport with intent, to name a few.
The problem with rule of law arguments such as “criminals don’t obey gun laws” is that the liberals in positions affecting change often step outside of the law themselves – just look at Rahm’s extortion letter to the banks.

  4. I live in the state of Maine. We have the second highest rate of private gun ownership per capita. second to Texas, and yet we manage to have the lowest crime rate in the country, per capita. This state directly conflicts with the scare tactics the libs use. It has never made sense to me why someone didn’t just take a look at WHY it’s this way and try and impliment it throughout the country. One of the biggest reasons why is because I KNOW that if I try and rob a store or do a home invasion theres a damn good chance the owner is going to shoot me. Another is that in Maine we do not treat guns like toys, they are a TOOL used to hunt and protect ones home and thats all. And another reason is we have a very low rate of minorities. (yea I know I said it so I’m racist right?, not a chance I’m being realistc, I’m just racist)
Time to take a real good look at WHO is commiting the majority of crimes involving guns and zero in on the real problem, and stop this babysitting the country and avoiding the problem. Criminals who would use a gun will instead use other weapons because they are criminals.
Taking the whole countries constitutional rights away from them goes against the very fiber of this country. The reason our founding fathers put this in the constitution in the first place is because they came from countries where the people were unarmed (except the rich) and they saw what happens when the people can not defend themselves.
Although I have seen on most antigun pages extremely misleading counts for deaths caused by guns. One reported that Maine had over 300 deaths in 10 years. When I looked into it, it turned out that once you took out things like suicide or criminals being shot by cops, you ended up with alittle over 90…in 10 years. And this same inflated out of context statistic was repeated on several liberal pages. So I can only assume that most of the statistics on these pages are inflated and out of context.
Why don’t these same people take a good look at the fact that since Obama has been in office we have had 15 (maybe more I lost track) public mass shootings(this does not include private mass shootings). That is triple the amount of any other administration in history. AND the majority of these were infact commited by democrats and liberals, not all mind you, the majority. and we still have a couple years to go.

    • Bonnie, I agree with just about everything you said, but I DO need to ask you what’s the difference between a “public” mass shooting and a “private” one. Please clarify, because to me, that didn’t seem to make much sense.

  5. “The very purpose of a Bill
of Rights was to withdraw certain subjects from the vicissitudes of political
controversy, to place them beyond the reach of majorities and officials and to
establish them as legal principles to be applied by the courts. One’s right to
life, liberty, and property, to free speech, a free press, freedom of worship
and assembly, and other fundamental rights may not be submitted to vote; they
depend on the outcome of no elections.”

: Robert H. Jackson, US Supreme Court Justice West Virginia
    State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943)

And, Mr. West, you do have one small mistake. There are no such things as “gun rights.” There are, however, constitutionally protected civil rights to keep arms and to bear arms. 😉

  6. LOCK n LOAD AMERICA , they WILL and ARE coming for MY/YOUR/OUR GUNS . Get ready for MARTIAL LAW, RACE RIOTS , CIVIL WAR and a REVOLUTION…

  7. When it becomes clear that this plague of massive government corruption and assaults on our constitutional rights, envelopes and controls our courts, we will be left with only one recourse to government tyranny. That recourse is a revolution against a infultrated, corrupt, and criminal federal government, ran by people who have violated their sworn oath to obey and support our constitution, and existing laws. Any individuals, groups, or organizations who support such a tyrannical and “anti-american and anti-constitutionial federal government”, will, (as they should), be guilty of being “counter-revolutionaries” of America’s original revolutionary war against the tyranny of the King of England”! They will be viewed for what they are, “internal enemies and traitors against America”. They will “identify themselves by the side they pick”, and delt with as such, no matter who they are or what position they hold! When wilful acts of treason by government, trumps our constitution, the time has come to; “water the tree of liberty with the blood of patroits and tyrants”. (quoted from the notes of Thomas Jefferson). Never trust or allow any government to take your weapons or impede their use by denial of ammunition or imposing unreasonable restrictions, taxes or fees, (“for your safety or the public good”), while they retain theirs! Guard your weapons as you guard your personal freedom, in this world, one relies upon the other!

  8. Obama ordered the EPA to shut down the ammunition plants in america by imposing “impossible restrictions” on the manufacturing of lead for bullets. The same “phony tactics” of (protecting the environment), he used to attack and shut down our coal industry. Obama is nothing but a “stealth, criminal and communist”, bent on destroying our nation, enslaving the country and creating his own military dictatorship. Obama’s orders and actions provide clear evidence of his pursuing these results. Obama is a “master manulipator” of “idoits and greedy traitors” who sadly number in the millions in this country. Many politicians, bankers, insurance companies, and other business owners, including greedy unions, are so “blinded by their lust for money and power”, they are willing to betray their country and their own future and “sell it out like Judas for seven pieces of Obama silver”. With the leadership of the GOP now “joining the Obama traitors”, and becomming a “second democrat party”, the only recourse left to americans who remain loyal to our constitution and our laws, will be a civil war. This appears to be much more likely to become a reality. We will be left with only two options, surrender to the lies and rule of an evil and corrupt communist dictatorship, or fight for your freedom.

    • And this exactly why Obama said in a TV interview during his first campaign,”We must disarm”. What bothers me is there are so many stupid cave dwellers out there that can’t figure out why there’s no business as usual in the firearms and reloading industries. They got what they voted for and hate to admit it, it’s hard going through life as a sheeple.

  9. “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” (Thomas Jefferson)

The above statement verifies that the People get to keep and bear the SAME arms as the government. Why? Because if, in 1775, the British Army had M16 style weapons whilst the Minutemen Militia had only Muskets, there would have been no American Revolution. So it logically follows that in order for the People to protect themselves against government tyranny, they need to be similarly armed as their goverment otherwise protection against the government would be impossible. And THAT… is why Obama, Biden, Feinstein, Bloomberg, et al., ONLY want you to have a double barreled shotgun.

So, when ANYONE asks you why you need an AR-15 or an AK-47 you say: “BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT HAS THEM.” Then explain to them what Jefferson said: “…as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” Period.

When they come for mine… they’d better bring theirs. When that time comes, don’t ask questions or take prisoners, ‘Remove’ as many liberals as you can. Don’t worry about “trampling” on their rights because they are certainly not bothered by trampling on yours. NO QUARTER.

  10. The ammo shortage in the US is being caused by:
1.Lead is being phased out of ammo (Calif outlawed it & ALL US Lead mines shut!)
    2. Large ammo purchases by US GOVT.
    3.Some Hoarding by shooters(Minimal cause))
But it is very strange that 22 cal ammo is in short supply as it was as common as Fords.

    • All lead used in ammunition is recycled, none of it came from the lead plant that was shut down. It’s easily researched.

California only outlawed it for hunting. Stupid, but still only for actual hunting. It’s effect is minimal.

The government hasn’t actually been buying more than usual, again… easily researched.

      It’s all hoarding.

I’m all about protecting our rights, but tin foil hat misinformation does not help anyone.
