Unbelievable: Illegal immigrants are winning out over military veterans in budget bill

Senate Republicans, lead by Senator Jeff Sessions, R-Ala were unsuccessful today in their effort to halt cuts to military veteran pensions. A provision in the already House-passed bill would cut retirement benefits for military retirees by $6 billion over 10 years.

As a viable alternative to the retirement cuts, Sen. Sessions wanted to instead eliminate an estimated $4.2 billion in annual spending by reining in an IRS credit that illegal immigrants have claimed.

It appears the illegal immigrants are getting better treatment than our veterans.

We’ve been sounding the alarm on these cuts ever since the first alert email from the Military Offices Association of America. This one percent cut to military retiree and medically-retired military COLA may seem minuscule to the well-paid members of the House and Senate who earn their Congressional retirement after serving only five years as opposed to 20 years for our military. But depending on retirement rank, the cuts mean a loss of $77,000 to $120,000 to military retirees after a minimum of two decades of selfless service.

It is unconscionable that these so called “lawmakers” in Washington DC cannot find $6 billion in budget savings without targeting those who have already sacrificed — especially after Senator Tom Coburn (R-Ok) released his government “waste book” that outlined $33 billion in wasteful spending.

As Fox News reported:

“It’s not correct, and it should not happen,” Sessions said, “By blocking my amendment, they voted to cut pensions for wounded warriors. Senators in this chamber have many valid ideas for replacing these pension cuts, including my proposal to close the tax welfare loophole for illegal filers, and all deserved a fair and open hearing. But they were denied.”

I’m not surprised Senate Democrats prefer tax credits for illegal immigrants over military retirement benefits. But to see some Republicans accepting this position, and for it to have passed the House of Representatives is even more disturbing.

Where are the representatives for those who have served? The mid-term elections are coming, and for those who turned their backs on the military, you shall indeed reap what you have sown.

Problem is, there are too many low information or non-information voters out there. They don’t care who they vote for as long as they are promised free or next-to-free stuff and there’s more of them out there than ever. They are not interested in budgets or how to cut deficits, debt. They want more, more, more and that’s what today’s politicians promise just to get votes..

Grew up on a family farm and that corporate welfare you are claiming doesn’t exist in the amount you think it does. Is there abuse yes just like any other program there is but look up the percentage of that farm bill that is food stamps and other welfare programs. Most of those farms are 3 to 5 generations farms and ranches. Look up the average price received per commodity raised for the last 80 years. What you do not seem to realize is that the welfare is the reason you had a problem making money. You get more of what you subsidize and in farming that means lower revenue for your crop.

Cut the welfare the strong will survive because prices will adjust to the market and not to the government subsidizes.

I blame Ryan for agreeing to this. But since your post we have learned that it was Dems on the conference committee who demanded equal dollar value cuts from current military retirees to match the savings from changing federal civilian pensions for new hires. Rep Van Hollen (D-MD) admitted as much. Also, every single Democrat except Kay Hagin voted for cloture allowing Harry Reid to block an amendment that would have fixed this before it was passed.

Do these numbers add up? $6 billion over 10 years is about $600 million per year. There are about 2 million military retirees. So on average (and some individuals will be way off the average of course) we’re talking $300 per year per retiree. No, we shouldn’t be cutting that, but how does that amount to ” a loss of $77,000 to $120,000″?

Jessica T.
Guest

Deacon John,
The cut is 1% of the retiree’s pay, it isn’t $600 million divided by the number of retirees. The $77,000 number would be what the military retiree would lose over the course of their retirement.
From Al.com
“The Military Officers Association
of America showing military personnel who serve 20 years could lose as much as
20 percent of their retirement pay under the bill. For example, an E-7 retiring at age 40
today would experience a loss of $83,000; an O-5 would lose $124,000.”

Hope this helps

Deacon John Saturus, I’m assuming your misunderstanding of military retirement and the cuts is due to you and your family not being affected by the issue… so from a family that will be affected, I’ll explain it to you. During 2011 there were 60,919 military members that retired so you can see that each year there are far fewer retirees than the total you claimed. Your total includes just retiring (affected fully by the cuts); previously retired (affected less by the cuts); and retirees over 62 (not affected by the cuts)… so yes the calculations are correct for new retirees… Read more »

A provision cutting the pensions of military retirees in the bipartisan budget deal that the Senate will vote on this week does not exempt disabled veterans, the Washington Free Beacon has learned. Disabled retirees were previously thought to be exempt from the changes to military retiree pay, which could cost servicemembers up to $124,000 over a 20-year period. The Free Beacon previously reported that military retirees under the age of 62 would receive 1 percentage point less in their annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in the plan crafted by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) and Senate Budget Committee… Read more »

I do not despise immigrants, I despise ILLEGAL aliens. Big difference there buddy. You start eliminating the benefits for United States VETERANS in lieu of benefits for ILLEGAL ALIENS and you have a serious problem. To me it is the same if not worse than take YOUR benefits from YOU (assuming you are a law-abiding citizen) and giving them all to the man that murdered two teens last year. He’s a felon, a criminal, but he gets your benefits. The difference is, you just worked for your benefits. Veterans put their lives on the line for their benefits.

HOW MANY ILLEGALS SIGED UP? DON’T ASK THE GOVERMENT, THEY LIE.
