Backdoor gun control is here: no lead means no bullets

I am one who steers very clear of tinfoil hat conspiracy theories. I often believe progressives plant stories in order to distract and disrupt, enabling them to pursue their true goals and objectives. That’s why I stress the importance of staying focused on the modern liberal socialist policies of the Obama administration, not the sideshow antics.

However, as a former combat commander, I have been trained to look for trends. And I believe we’ve found a very disturbing one. it seems that back door gun control is in full effect in the United States. Why? Thanks to Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we can no longer smelt lead from ore in the United States.

The first contact the EPA made with The Doe Run Lead Smelter in Herculaneum, Missouri (population 2,800) was in 2008 but it was in 2010 that the EPA finally forced Doe Run to plan a shut down. This plant has been in operation since 1892 but will finally close its doors this month. It was the last lead smelting plant in the US.

The closedown is due to new extremely tight air quality restrictions placed on this specific plant. President Obama and his EPA raised the regulations by 10 fold and it would have cost the plant $100 million to comply.

In response to the Doe Run lead smelter shutdown, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the Doe Run Company “made a business decision” to shut down the smelter instead of installing pollution control technologies needed to reduce sulfur dioxide and lead emissions as required by the Clean Air Act.

Of course this is why we need serious regulatory reform that precludes executive agency fiat, especially regulation implementation that exceeds a certain adverse financial impact to a private sector business.

Of course the canned progressive socialist response is “For years families with children near Doe Run’s facilities have been exposed to unacceptable levels of lead, one of the most dangerous neurotoxins in the environment,” said Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator for the EPA’s Office of Compliance and Enforcement Assurance. There are a few auxiliary lead processing plants remaining in the USA but their function is to re-claim lead from old batteries.

What this all means is that after December 2013, any ammunition that will be available to US citizens will have to be imported, which will surely increase the price and possibly come under government control. It seems this is fully in concert with the US Military and Homeland Defense recent purchase of large quantities of ammunition.

As Terresa Monroe Hamilton wrote on Noisy.net

The effect is chilling: you can own all the guns you want, but if you can’t get ammo, you are out of luck. Remember when President Obama promised his minions that he was working on gun control behind the scenes? Welcome to it. The result is that all domestically mined lead ore will have to be shipped overseas, refined and then shipped back to the US.

Not only will ammo be even harder to come by, the demand and the process of supply will cause the price to skyrocket even more. And ponder this, there is an excellent chance that Obama will rig the market to where all ammo has to be purchased from the government instituting an ammo registration.

There hasn’t been a peep about this in the major news outlets, but it’s done. With the US no longer producing lead, all supplies will now have to come from China, Australia or Peru, with the overwhelming emphasis on China.

China is the largest miner of lead and the largest importer of scrap lead in the world. The highly progressive state of California recently passed a law that lead ammo is banned for sporting use. There is an alternative, copper ammo, but it is hugely expensive to make, and pure copper bullets are frequently labeled ‘cop killers’ so they can’t be sold.

So America, back door gun control is moving forward and while we are all distracted with Obamacare and Iran nuclear negotiations, our Second Amendment rights are undergoing an assault by clandestine infiltration. Remember we reported on this website the gun registration actions being undertaken in Washington DC. Barack Obama and his progressive socialist acolytes are quite savvy at political chess. He is seeking to outflank, envelope, and destroy the Second Amendment. Now it’s our move in 2014.

Since the government has been buying up lots of ammo through various agencies including the Social Security Administration, (what’s up with that – early forced retirements??) I guess we should be saving old batteries.

The Government should pass a regulation that prohibits, {Allen West calls them Progressives, I call them Marxists} from expelling CO2. One way to keep the expansion of Marxism in the USA would be to have them stop breathing by their own fiat.

You’re right with this one. I think a better way would be for a few of our wealthy conservatives who like to shoot to buy the smelter, comply with the EPA BS, and continue smelting lead and sell it to anyone but the government. If conservatives ever get control of the government we could then repeal a lot of the BS and go back to being a prosperous country, under Constitutional laws; maybe get the number of laws, and lawyers reduced to a reasonable number, and get back into a competitive free market economy with some common sense. Actually the “lead” in our ammo is not made from lead extracted from ore. It is 80% recycled batteries. The closure of this Primary smelter( a plant that makes lead from ore) will not hinder the production of ammo.

Eduardo Blanco
Guest

With the closure of the primary smelter they we as a nation are losing 130,000 tons of available lead. Recycled materials are never recovered 100%, and the primary smelter has been bridging the gap between the loss in lead recovery from batteries. With the primary smelter closed, you will see in increase demand due to the decrease in supply. It’s basic economics.
Prices will go up, it’s inevitable.

Peter Erik Bensen
Guest

Commercial demand will soon outstrip recycled lead production. The lead has to be renewed from somewhere, either domestic mines and smelters or importers (namely China). Unless you believe in the “lead fairy”, that is.

Robert Koch
Guest

you can buy lead weights at any tire shop for junk price….

mike
Guest

And where does the lead for car batteries come from? Yup….the tail chases the head.

Babylonandon
Guest

… and newer car batteries coming on line will NOT be lead acid.

Peter Erik Bensen
Guest

Most car batteries WILL BE lead acid. With increasing electrical demand in automobiles (extra outlets for chargers, electric brakes and steering, back-up cameras, satellite uplinks, etc.) wear and tear and SIZE of batteries will increase. DEMAND will drive up the price of lead and reduce it’s supply and availability for commercial (i.e. CIVILIAN) bullet production.

Babylonandon
Guest

We’ll see 5 – 10 years from now how many of those lead-acid batteries are still being installed..

No. It’s to continue driving the price of lead upwards to help China, AND hurt the ammo industry, which also helps China and helps the assault on rights. This squeeze is not just by the D, but also the R, who all get their money from the same places.

not sure all the facts are correct. I do not use lead only bullets, mine are all copper clad. Many people that cast lead bullets use tire balance weights. I doubt the statement that all bullets will have to be imported, The industry will come up with a substitute for lead if it can’t get any. Where do you think the lead from your gun club’s range came from? And where did they get the wheel balance weights? Recycled lead supply will soon be outstripped by commercial demand. Moving lead production offshore to countries with NO EPA regulations does NOTHING to improve air quality. This Obama edict may not cause a lead shortage TOMORROW, but it will cause a shortage during any military or economic crisis. The Federal government has also ended (by Obama Administration edict) the sale of surplus military brass. All those .308, .223, 9mm, and .45ACP brass cases the armed forces went through in training used to be sold to commercial reloaders, as well as reloading component retailers. Now, all brass is shredded and sold for mere scrap value. A loss of MILLIONS annually. This is purely an Obama act.

I’m scared for my children. My wife told me today she read some sort of post stating that CA. was passing some sort of law staying they had the right to take legally obtained weapons for having such a minor infraction as a speeding ticket. This is 2nd hand info so not for sure.

Peter Erik Bensen

Probably not a speeding ticket per se, but a “breach of the peace” ticket possibly could. Disturbing the peace, public intox, criminal trespass (being in the park after dark) could be used for grounds. In my opinion California has too many gray areas in their gun laws. The Devil is in the details, the regulations, as opposed to the laws, in my view.

David, I would suggest you read the article from Sierra again and count all the “IFS” in it before you call this article “utter BS”. Also, do you honestly think one bullet manufacturer can supply enough to keep all the gun owners in this country supplied? And please, don’t tell me Obama isn’t smart enough to have figured out his next 3 moves…….

Peter Erik Bensen

Baloney. They stated that it will only increase prices and add uncertainty to the commercial lead supply. Sierra’s disclaimer that they only use recycled lead belies the fact that Sierra is virtually a 24/7 operation whose business would be destroyed by an extended commercial ammunition panic. If you don’t think it’s ironic that that the nations oldest lead smelter and most prominent old bullet manufacturer are located a short drive from one another, you are not looking deeply enough into this issue. Sierra is not the ONLY bullet manufacturer, only among the biggest 2 or 3. I’m sure every OTHER… Read more »

The answer is a qualified no. The main question asked is “Will this shut down your supply of lead.” The answer to that is no. First, Sierra buys lead from several different vendors to maintain constant supply. Second, this facility only smelts primary lead or lead ore. This is lead ore that has just been brought out of the earth. Sierra… Read more »

@Richard Stickles: That was their short answer. They also said that prices would almost certainly rise and they would not rule out disruptions of lead supply. Sierra is one of the largest and most prominent bullet makers in the country. It’s safe to say that it’s in their best interests NOT to create panic in their industry. A “lead panic” would do two things (among others) to their industry. It would create “boom and bust” cycles in their business. Making it difficult to manage and plan their business. More importantly, if there is disruption to lead (recycled or otherwise) supply,… Read more »

I’m from Missouri, we have been trying to get the Governor to open a special session of the MO State Legislator to pass a law to protect Doe Run from the EPA and protect the important strategic national resource. Instead the idiot governor opens a special session asking the State Legislator to pass tax credits to try to bring Boeing into the state… never mind the fact that Boeing is looking for a state that has Right to Work laws, not tax credits. The closing of Doe Run is a major national disaster, that will only get worse as the… Read more »

The motive (gun control) for the government putting the lead smelter out of business is almost secondary to me as a concern. The fact that they were able to put such heavy and unreasonable regulations upon them is truely frightening. The government was able to shut down our last lead smelting facility? This is America for G-d sakes! Lord help us combat this tide of destruction.

Find a way to import lead ingots. Lead slabs. And also start collecting lead !! Tire weights.. Old xray clinics being tore down. Theres always alternative shot for shotguns !!!

Col. West,

Your post is disappointing. You either failed to do the appropriate research or deliberately manufactured misinformation.

1. The EPA regulations you referenced were put in place under President Bush, not President Obama. The notice given to Doe Run was in 2008 and they responded to that notice in 2010 that they would choose to shut down rather than invest in compliance.
2. Doe Run lead is not used in ammunition manufacturing.
3. Ammunition supply and availability will go unchanged and uninterrupted.

Will you correct your accusations, or, are your claims purposeful and intended to stir the crazies?

You are only partially true with your comments. Read the following news release from the company itself: http://www.doerun.com/MediaCenter/NewsReleases/Article/Herculaneum-Smelter-Update.aspx

My three points are entirely true. The source of the first two points is from Doe Run communications. The third is from material source research for ammunition manufacturers.

Palmer Brown- Thank you for posting this info. It’s public information but for whatever reason, people refuse to read for themselves.

public information..? so, because it’s public then it MUST be true. if the government says it then it cannot be a lie… well, if that’s the case then I guess everything we read is true. so is all the stuff on the internet. oh, and don’t forget aliens, they are living amongst us..! and wait, they found atlantis..! you sir are also an idiot, mostly for simply believing it when someone told you we are… go suckle on OCARE and leave the intelligent discussions for the people with the REAL facts, not the government supplied lies…

More unfortunately, they don’t want to know the truth or facts and prefer to believe the false narratives.

you sir are a fool. it does not matter who the president was when the EPA regs where passed. the EPA is NOT accountable to anyone… you don’t even understand how things are done to get around the constitutional restrictions. the EPA is NOT a constitutional government agency. I believe the person who is not interested in facts is looking back at you in the mirror every morning. what I find disappointing is you, for all your knowledge you are completely lacking in wisdom, and that is the honest truth…

Palmer Brown

Who the President was does matter when someone (Col. West) falsely attributes responsibility on them. What is the purpose? To stir the crazies (you)?

Go find a compound to live out your fantasy revisionist thinking of American History and what “the constitooshun says!”

I want to see the EPA, the DHS, OSHA, the NSA, the IRS, and all of the other government agencies that have been turned into political weapons SHUT DOWN FOREVER..! That of course is NOT going to happen, and THAT is why this country is finished as the nation it once was, and is being transformed into an OBAMINATION… May God forgive us for squandering our freedom and allowing one of the greatest countries every to see a sunrise, (a country founded on Him), fall into decay and rot while we slept…

i’m not right wing. I am a fact based supporter of our constitution. when I joined the military as a much younger man I took an oath to uphold and defend that same constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. the only idiots in this country have voted for O, I’m sure you know who they are, and THEY are my enemies. You probably are too…

You should be standing on a ledge when reciting that. The nation is just as strong and great as it’s ever been. Lose the drama.

I hope that you are right about that, I truly do. Would you mind lifting my spirits, (and talking me off the ledge), by quoting me some evidence to support your statement..? Anything will do. Better unemployment numbers, preferably real ones, not the phony ones they have been giving us for decades. Yes, that would be a good place to start since I have years of personal experience with how tough it actually is to get a job these days. Wait, how about OCARE..! Please make my day brighter by convincing me that all will be right with the world… Read more »

Sure, the DHS could be absorbed into other agencies but the suggestion that the others be closed is shortsighted if not simply moronic.

I’m sorry you feel that I am lacking in intelligence because I don’t care for the way the constitution has been circumvented by the creation of governmental regulatory agencies that are NOT accountable to the voters… while I may only have a modicum of intelligence, I suppose your superior mental capacities fully understand the need for the FEDGOV to be able to effect, (via regulation not legislation), every part of our lives. As evidence of their latest endeavor on this front, I give you: OCARE…

As someone who has lived long enough to know, I can assure you our nation is not nearly as great as it once was. It’s sad but people like you and other young people, have never known any different. I guess you can’t miss what you never had. I had it once and miss it now.

I agree with you R Wing. Thank you too, Johnny8, for having to list out the atrocities of our government for Palmer Brown. This nation is just a shell of what it was and the MOST destruction to it has been in the last 5 years. This president (I’m too ashamed to write the criminal’s name here) has damaged our country (it’s your country too, Mr. Brown) beyond recognition. I can hardly recognize it. I hope you folks have stockpiled some lead ammo.

Zinc would make a nice projectile, don’t you think?

Peter Erik Bensen

So would a rock, Eric. If you want comic projectiles or comic relief, yes pennies would be nice. In reality lead is the best projectile for a number of reasons. It’s been in use since King David’s time. While David used 5 river rocks to assail Goliath, other slingers were using swaged lead. Lead is heavy, dense, and easily formed even with hand tools into projectiles. Even copper jacketed projectiles. When you try to replace lead with tungsten, bismuth, copper, bronze, steel, zinc, silver, the process to forming bullets becomes much more complex, expensive, and less effective. Have you considered how many new gun owners we have just this year? And that these new shooters will want to buy ammo for their new weapons to shoot? Its not a conspiracy , its supply and demand.

there is truth in what you are saying, but I believe there is much more than that going on here. 2 years ago the Wal-Mart shelves where full of ammo. There where multiple manufacturers available in all calibers. Have you been to a Wal-Mart recently..? Have you seen those long shelves where the ammo used to be..? Those shelves in all the stores are EMPTY… That is a TON of ammo that has been sold and NOT restocked. Why..? If it is such a HUGE seller, (and it was which is why Wal-Mart’s board of directors over ruled a company… Read more »

With Presidential gun grabber policies, goals, or ideals comes MASSIVELY increased demand for firearms and ammo. Happened with Clinton, happened with Obama. Not exactly supply and demand. More like a panicked response to perceived oppression.

This article is inaccurate there are several smelters in the US. Johnson Controls just opened a state of the art facility in Florence, SC….there are also smelters just across the border in Mexico.

bellinR

Johnson Controls opens automotive battery recycling facility in Florence, South Carolina.

The article is about the mine in Missouri and lead smelted there at the plant which will be shut down. If you read carefully, it say there are battery recycle plants in the usa.

I live a few miles from the Doe Run Facility in Herculaneum. 350 people will lose their jobs. Doe Run will still mine lead ore at the Viburnum mine. It will most likely have too be shipped to Brazil or Peru.. They do recycle commercial batteries a few miles from Viburnum at the Buick Recycling facility. Col. West is correct about the EPA standards being so high, the company would go bankrupt trying too attain those goals. The EPA routinely monitors the exhaust from the plant. I can recall over the last ten years, only a couple of times when the… Read more »

No, I dont think so.. Most ammunition producers use recycled lead. I would like to bring up another point that has gotten lost in the shuffle. Google Cancer rates in Jefferson County Missouri. They are higher than the National average.

The operant verbiage is primary as in smelting raw lead from mined sources. Doe Run is in fact the last primary lead smelter operating in the United States.

Fairly certain the Johnson Controls plant in South Carolina is a secondary/recycling lead smelter. Not a primary “from ore” smelter. I’d be interested to see if there are indeed primary lead ore smelters still active in the US as you say. The last thing we need is more reliance on other countries.

recycling is not smelting from ORE.

Before this impact trickles down to ammo manufacturing, which uses reclaimed lead, I believe it will impact the battery market first. Guess hybrid car manufacturers will be required to use fairly unstable Lithium Ion’s for everything…

Steve Morandi

I’ve talked with a couple ammo guys. Most buy recycled lead from old car batteries ect, so they don’t think there will be an impact. But again, we give all the business to China. What about all the green car batteries? All lead will come from high polluting plants in China
