“Hunger Games” and Obama’s vision

For many of us, this is a day of preparation and travel for our great gathering of families and friends. I pray safe travels for all those heading towards areas affected by severe weather. I hope not too many will have to spend their Thanksgiving in an airport terminal.

Our oldest daughter, Aubrey, is driving up from Nova Southeastern University – just a short 50 miles or so. Aubrey loves to cook turkey, and she does a doggone good job. However, she has already planned the Thanksgiving eve and wants to spend the evening at the movie theater watching The Hunger Games Part II, Catching Fire with dear ol’ Dad.

Our younger daughter, Austen, and our Chinese exchange student Lin decided to see the movie this past week for Austen’s birthday — they were so excited. I must admit, I enjoyed the first movie and am looking forward to this evening — although my wife Angela isn’t into it.

What truly caught my attention about the movie goes back to a statement made by disgraced former US Senator and presidential candidate John Edwards about “two Americas.”

In The Hunger Games there are two different societies structured after a national revolution. The country is divided up into a dozen or so districts which are responsible for producing respective resources and products to sustain those few who live in “The Capitol.”

Yes indeed, there are two Americas reflected in this movie just as we seem to have in real life: the hardworking Americans and the political elites.

In our real world, we have the opportunity society and the dependency society being created by President Obama. It resembles the old Soviet system of everybody in the Politburo who operated above the law. It is two Americas pitting those who struggle to make ends meet against those who live lavish lifestyles.

How interesting that leading up to Thanksgiving, President Obama found himself traipsing across California for fundraisers and hanging out in Hollywood — so much for the empty rhetoric of caring for the “middle class.”

It’s the same empty rhetoric of John Edwards. Just like those living in the districts in The Hunger Games, we working stiffs are commanded to expend our energies to sustain the opulence of The Capitol.

I found it quite ironic in the movie that the primary source of transportation from the districts to the Capitol was high speed rail — fascinating. But what is the most chilling parallel is that in the movie, the districts must annually submit two of their young people to be sacrificed in a brutal gladiatorial competition in order to satisfy the lust and entertain the residents of the Capitol.

How interesting that we are now being directed — ok, coerced –into providing our young people to Obamacare in order to placate the gods of progressive socialism. You see, without sacrificing young healthy Americans, President Obama’s vision of universal healthcare fails.

I suppose now that we see this movie in a different light, Obama will have his hollywood cronies denigrate the film — ask Katheryn Bigelow what happened with Zero Dark Thirty.

It’s funny some times how art can imitate life, and in this case, there are countless parallels between the fascist Capitol of The Hunger Games, and the onerous actions of lies, deceit, deception, and intimidation coming from the liberal socialists of the Obama administration. In the movie there is a young heroine, Katniss, and eventually she leads a revolt against the Capitol — art imitating life.

I was floored to hear a dear liberal friend seeing the story not as an example of where socialism takes us..but as an example of why we should redistribute the wealth to rectify ‘social injustice’. Completely ignorant of repeated historical examples of where socialism leads!!!!They look in a mirror and don’t recognize themselves

I have noticed that whether Orwell’s ‘1984’ or the movie ‘V for Vendetta’, both show the product of socialism…but the stories blame it on religious, moral (meant to be seen as Christian ) dictators. I haven’t seen that in Hunger Games yet.

Yes Allen West, because Obamacare sacrifices young people (not true if anything it saves young people who had no health insurance), and high speed railways are the root of all evil. There are so many parallels. You are a crazy man. I am shocked you have a political career. Canada, Italy, Germany, France all have socialist government structures I do not see any parallels between the Hunger Games and these countries. It is a conclusion only someone who is crazy could come to. Ronald Reagan passed the Emergency Medical Treatment Act in 1986 that was socialized medicine, but it was… Read more »

George Soros’s pays you well to write that garbage! Keep spreading the lies it helps spread the truth. I have lived in other countries that have socialized medicine and getting to see a Doctor is like winning the lottery, then you finally get diagnosed and you have to wait a long time to get surgery or help. Thanks for the laugh!

And NotCrazy, you have totally missed the point. Not surprisingly, since it sounds like you are hopelessly pro-socialism. I know people from Canada and England and they totally abhor their socialized health care. Please move to one of those countries you are so fond of.

NotCrazy NOT!- You are obviously wearing an SOS stamped to your forehead for STUCK ON STUPID. Put down the comic books, get back on your feet and stand back from that glory hole. All that swallowing has gone to your pea brain. What fantasy world are you living in? It must be nice to still have mommy and daddy taking care of you. Take off those rose colored glasses and do a little open minded research fool. Follow a clown and you’ll end up in bad karma Obammunist’s big top. And you, sitting right in the center wearing a nice… Read more »

Well that’s your opinion but my opinion is that you are the crazy one for all of the arguments that you present here. You are blinded by the rhetoric and apparently incapable of thinking for yourself. You are the type that communists & dictators thrive on….like children being hypnotized by the Pied Piper…….get a clue & wake up.

Walmart is an entry level job. You do not need skills to work there. It is a job to learn how to be part of a workforce, have a boss, show up on time etc. It’s a first job, a job while going to school, or a supplement to retirement. People are demanding $12.00 per hour for Walmart employees? EMTs make about $10.00 do you really think hanging up clothes is more difficult than saving peoples lives for instance? People should move on to better jobs. Unless you are saying the people there full time are not very smart and… Read more »

Why no one understands this is beyond me… I think the people rallying for more money for entry level employees must not understand that it will cause the price of what is being sold to rise….which in the long run will reduce how many people are actually hired…. because less people will be able to afford what the store carries.

Maybe the difference NotCrazy is that those countries you name above never had the constitution that we have (or had, not sure if it still applies) Do you know what a living wage is? If those employed at lower wages put in the effort needed then they would move up. Do you think those at minimum wage stay there their entire life?

NotCrazy. Couple of things. The Hunger Games movie does remind me of a Gay Pride parade in San Francisco and the linkage with Democrats is profound. The two portrayed societies are also telling. Occupy vs the rest of America!! Younger folks who buy Obama care will pay a premium, which will be heavily subsidized. The American Tax payer will be stuck with the subsidy bill estimated by the Office of Budget to be 3 Trillion. Remember, America has a 17 trillion debt that young people will soon be asked to pay back! Now, these same young folks, if they get… Read more »

Everybody could make the choice not to sign up and just pay the fine. The program can’t work without the healthy, working, young men and women funding it. Pay the fine–it’s cheaper! And let’s not forget the death panels for those older Americans like me who won’t get health care regardless of what plan they pay for. Let the progressive White House Leech suck on his own blood and that of his cronies for a change, and leave the rest of us the hell alone. The Hunger Games could very well play out in America–it’s already started. We still have… Read more »

I, personally, am not signing up and am not paying no fine. Will go to jail if necessary; at least, there, I will get health care. PPACA is unconstitutional and therefore illegal and, as an American citizen and a patriot, I will stand for the Constitution, regardless of the cost. Would urge all others who talk the talk to grow a pair and walk the walk. “Live Free or Die Hard”. Much Love, God Bless.

And that $4000-$8000 & some deductibles as high as $12,000 , is EVERY YEAR! That’s like buying & paying cash for a good used car EVERY YEAR!! & costs will go up! Yesterday I heard a report from a lady, their monthly payments will be over $1200 a month, more than their house payment!!!

Interesting parallelisms. As good as the first movie was the book was even better. Happy Thanksgiving Allen.

When the first book was assigned as a read for our boo club I was totally against the idea. “Who wants to see teenagers fight each other to the death.” But I downloaded the book and started reading. Within 36 hours I was downloading book two, then another 36 hours and I was reading book three. So many parallelisms with our current govt. and culture. I would highly recommend the series. The movies are good but have to leave too much background material out for time sake. I’m glad Allen West is enjoying the movies. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I’m thinking of our warriors who gave us their all and braving the cold as they rest in peace at Arlington. Because of them, we are fortunate to be eating a hot meal and kept warm inside. Bless our American Souls…may they feel the warmth of their good deeds in our hearts.

I can’t remember ever “hating” anyone. This is the first time I have ever had resentful feelings toward America. I watched a WWII veterans special on TV last night with Megan Kelly and couldn’t stop crying. I would have died without a thought for the country I use to live in. We need to get this anti Christ out of our Whitehouse and not just impeach him, put him on trial for treason. nuff said.
