On this day, 24 November, 17 years ago, a very special gift came into my life – one of God’s everyday miracles, the birth of a child.
This little child was born into this world in Topeka, Kansas at Stormont-Vail Hospital and we named her Austen Brianna West. I will never forget the drive back up to Manhattan, Kansas from Topeka with our new baby girl.
About half way she began to cry and a loving big sister, Aubrey, forcefully demanded, “Daddy, drive faster my sister is hungry and we have to get her home.” To this day Aubrey is very protective of her younger sister.
I nicknamed Austen “Beetlejuice” because if you remember the movie and the lead character, Austen can also be a bit annoying at times — and weird. But I love her dearly.
Angela and I have seen God’s gift of life and that is why we are indeed pro-life. We are reminded each time we gaze into the eyes of our daughters Aubrey and Austen.
On this day, the 17th remembrance of God’s blessing of a child to Angela and me, we recommit ourselves to ensuring we lift Austen up before God for His blessing. We also rededicate ourselves to ensuring that Austen grows up in a greater America and has more opportunities than what our parents bequeathed to us.
Love your children America, and fight to secure for them the blessings of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — that is my promise to be renewed this day for Austen, and every day to your children.
