Realignment of military budget must have enemies cheering

According to the New York Times, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is pondering “realignment” of the military budget, which means a shift in strategic posture. That’s the sort of news which should cause grave concern about our military readiness – unless, of course, you’re one of our enemies.

According to Secretary Hagel, “The Army was the principal institution fighting those two wars (Iraq and Afghanistan), as the armies normally are in land wars,” Mr. Hagel said. “So as those requirements have come down, there’s going to be an adjustment.” That view is driving a new look at the Pentagon’s traditional, even distribution of funds. Hagel further states, “I don’t think you can just make easy, simple assertions based on simple formulas — a third, a third, a third,” he said. “That might turn out to be just about right, but it may not.”

We need visionary leadership that analyzes the growing global threats instead of trying to anticipate missions based upon political preferences. Every dollar is not equal in Washington DC and the most vital mission of the federal government is to protect the American people.

I wish the Obama administration would be more concerned about military readiness and funding instead of expanding the welfare nanny-state and Obamacare. Consider what $634 million could have meant for the US military, instead of being wasted on a failed website, healthcare.gov.

Yes there is waste at the Department of Defense and there should be an audit of their accounts. However, we should be going to our Combatant Commanders and asking them what are the burgeoning threats they perceive in their geographic areas of responsibility over the next 15 years.

Then we should develop a power projection-type force –not forward-deployed — which can meet those threat-based requirements. The last thing we need is another 21st Century “Kasserine Pass” where we throw an unready Army into the field against a well resourced, trained, and battle-tested adversary.

My greatest concern is that our federal government priorities are upside down and that Chuck Hagel is just a complicit puppet executing the political agenda emanating from the White House via Valerie Jarrett. President Obama gave a surrender speech last May at the National Defense University. And he fails to realize the enemy has a vote.

As Andrew McCarthy summed up in his review of the speech at the time,

If I am an aggressor and I punch you in the nose, we are in a fight, even if you weren’t looking for a fight. The fight does not end just because you insist you’re not in a fight. The fight ends because you lose. Your ostentatious display of not having a quarrel with me does not convince me to stop hitting you — although it may convince me to keep hitting you.

We cannot end war by pretending it isn’t happening. Don’t believe for a second our enemies aren’t watching us slowly dismantle our capability. The wolves are salivating.

  1. Like you, Mr. West, I am alarmed by the disregard for the security of Americans at home and abroad. The fact is that Obama has strategically removed military commanders recently, and the silence is deafening with regard to an examination of this process. Obama talked about starting a “citizen militia,” before his first election. Perhaps it’s time for real patriots to take up this cause.

  2. In the private sector you need to have certain qualifications to get hired for a job. Big Government on the other hand has an epidemic of failure by placing unqualified people in top jobs. Who in the current Cabinet is actually qualified for their position? This would also include the POTUS, an epic failure with zero qualifications beyond community organizing, and Hillary Clinton who as SOS was also an epic failure.

If your going to have successful people you need a better vetting process and a complete, publicly exposed resume with a several page cover letter explaining how you’re qualified for the job. This needs to appear on the Internet for all citizens to see. And Senators who confirm this bunch of ne’er-do-wells need to fully explain their decision beyond politics. Of course, how many elected officials are qualified for their jobs?

    • What I wonder about is; How has the “GREATEST NATION IN HISTORY” LETTING this happen? There is a time and place for Political Correctness” just “NOT HERE AND NOT NOW”!!! Our future and that of our children is at stake!!!

  3. I’m so glad Allen is calling attention to this. What on earth does the left imagine our enemies are doing as we gut and dismantle our defenses? I actually had a shouting match with an idiot liberal one day after he asked, “Why do we need a military?!!!” Let’s not forget that hundreds, possibly thousands of enemy agents have been pouring across our border for years now. This administration is suicide, PERIOD!

  4. under the current White House occupant the military is nothing but a social justice/jobs program..he has no respect for them, he holds outright contempt even and it shows how he uses the troops/Vets for photo-ops and has Marines hold umbrellas while joking about it or calling MOH recipients by their first names like they were drinking buds as he looks down his nose at them. The occupant will hollow out the military to the point it is a paper tiger on par with the post WWI military to create and fund more social programs

  5. I am sorry I just can not read any more of this “crapola” coming out of the White House.
I joined USAF in Dec 1959, I retired from Navy June 1989. I have seen what these “Rocks With Lips” keep doing to the military because it is an easy target. Instead of cutting the real waste to numerous to mention here. There are also many high ranking people in service today that are in lock step with Obama……….

    • Many of us know exactly what odumbo is doing to our Military. LT Col West is right on. What can we the conservative middle class do about it?? I sign as many petitions from conservative senators etc. as I can.

  6. He still has three years left to dismantle whats left of our military, we are in trouble. You can believe China, Russia, and Iran are watching very closely and love Obama’s view of our military.

  7. Chuck Hagel is having his agenda meted out to him by Valery Jarrett. We should be concerned. There is also the collateral damage form the liberal media.
When the lame stream media led America’s youth down the path to electing a compulsive liar to be the president of the U.S. they may assume it was politically correct to have an Iranian, Valery Jarrett, in charge of the white house cabinet. Valery Jarrett made the call to stand down in Benghazi. I surmise it was her doing to withdraw security form the Benghazi compounds. I submit that it was Valery Jarrett’s meddling that got 17 seal team six members killed in the extortion 7 scandal. So how do you feel that you can no longer afford health insurance, having worshiped Obama at the beckoning call of the lame stream media? Do you feel emboldened and strong having someone in the highest offices of power in the oval office who use executive privilege to prevent release of privileged information on these events. Did you know what would happen by giving such persons such absolute powers? Did you not believe Obama when he said he would have the most transparent administration ever? I came to the conclusion that Obama would be the least transparent, most dishonest and dangerous president in the history of the U.S. even before his first presidential debate. I saw all those promises and the media gushing for the sham that it is.

  8. it is all a part of the Obama agenda to ruin the nation piecemeal parceled out over his terms as president.
he advances the Muslim Brotherhoods agenda at the cost of our security. he is removing the leaders that might follow their oaths of duty replacing them with head bobbing minions.

  9. Valirey Jarrett, the one who issued the “STAND DOWN” Orders! And someone is “LISTNING” to that “obozo talking head!!. Get serious!!!
She is as much American as the man on the moon!!!!, well it maybe!!!
“SHE GOT AMERICIANS KILLED” or does she get a do-over? Bet Ambassador Stevens wished for that too!!! “WE THE PEOPLE” don’t need her kind here!!!

    • It seems that this is the history of our military lately. I was in the military when Clinton was in office and was dismantling our military and was lucky enough to qualify for “TARA” ( temporary early retirement act). Then Bush had the task of trying to rebuild what Clinton had destroyed. There is an attitude from the Dems and it doesn’t matter whether they hold office or not that the military is useless and expendable. As an enlisted member I was expected to be on call 24/7, do my normal assigned duties ( there is no such thing as over time pay in the military) and live on a pay check that was at or below the poverty level. Our greatest assist to maintain peace is a strong military ( big dogs are left alone ), our military should be at the for front of technology and the best equipped and trained in the world, this isn’t the case. We should also have leaders who understand and back our military not mock criticize and dismantle it. When we go to battle it should be to with purpose and that is to win not to occupy. Our military is a gem that needs to be protected at all costs and on display for all to admire. This will never be the case when there is a Democratic majority or President in office.

  11. While as I a veteran myself I believe we should support the military financially and keep it strong. On the other hand the government needs to rethink how they do the budgeting for the military. The ideal that at the end of the year you have to hurry up and spend excessive money in order to get the same amount next year is wrong. I seen a lost of wasteful spending while I was in just because of that. Responsible spending should be the goal and they should still get the same amount the following year. If it is not spent then at the end of the year it can be applied to the national debt. Reward commanders for responsible spending.
