Iraq and Iran: US looking for love in all the wrong places

Recently, US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and Secretary of State John Kerry held closed-door top-secret meetings to persuade the US Senate foreign relations and banking committees to end sanctions on Iran. The next day, Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki visited the White House to ask for assistance against terrorist insurgents. Trying to curry favor with either Iraq or Iran is a losing proposition.

Having served in Iraq and Afghanistan, I can tell you it’s well recognized that Iranian influence is heavy in providing weapons, especially explosive force penetrators (EFPs) and training to groups fighting against our deployed men and women. We also know that Iran is led by radical theocrats with one goal in mind: destruction of the smaller Satan (Israel) and the greater Satan (America). We must understand their concept of returning the Mahdi, the hidden Imam, and what that means for the global Islamic revolution and global conquest.

When the world was polarized by the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, the theory of MAD, Mutual Assured Destruction ensured there would never be a solely nuclear confrontation that would guarantee no winner. It was a practical and rational theory. However, when dealing with Islamic totalitarians, especially the mad mullahs and ayatollahs, it is not about rational thought but rather an irrational religious ideology rooted in 7th century precepts, and commands.

Amidst this backdrop, the belief that the US would be able to have successful negotiations with the revolutionary Islamic state of Iran demonstrates a naïveté not seen since Sir Neville Chamberlain. Perhaps if Lew and Kerry studied Islamic history and law, they would understand the impetus behind the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, circa 626 AD, which was supposed to ensure 10 years of peace but instead led to Mohammed’s Conquest of Mecca a year later, and the concept of “taqiyya” or concealing one’s beliefs (i.e. lying). Iran will use negotiations as a stall tactic, quite similar to Hitler’s negotiations with Chamberlain, but press on with their nuclear objectives.

On the following day, Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite, came to the White House to beg US assistance against resurgent Sunni terrorism. It was just two years ago that al-Maliki refused to support a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) to allow a continued US presence. However, it was a typically disinterested President Obama who did not strongly pursue the SOFA nor advocate for a residual force to remain. It is obvious that al-Maliki is seeking favor from President Obama to fight against a common enemy, al Qaeda –supposedly “decimated” according to Obama.

President al-Maliki has viciously attacked the People’s Mojahedin of Iran or the Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), a group openly seeking to overthrow the Iranian regime. President Obama has backtracked on promises to protect the MEK in Iraq. But this group is our friend.

We have turned our backs against the Kurds and Assyrians in Iraq. But these are also our friends.

Let’s be very clear: Islamic totalitarianism is our enemy. It can be manifested in Sunni (Muslim Brotherhood, Al Qaeda, Taliban) or Shia (Hezbollah) groups. We do not share a common sense of purpose or cultural ideal with either, or their state sponsors. And we’re playing a very dangerous and fruitless game trying to cozy up to Islamists from any country.

  1. I think we should we leave them alone to settle their own scores? Israel has proven strength time and time again. We’re just in the way.

  2. It is just so bad that I will not cut the Obama Administration any slack or believe they are just naive or stupid. They are traitors and criminals because they know exactly what they are doing. Hoping Israel takes care of the problem and with extreme prejudice.

  3. You are right regarding this mess. It goes back to the Tehran Conference where the 3 powers made decisions on controlling the Middle East. It is unfortunate that we, the USA receiving the repurcussions of the lies and broken promises made by our government because of the shadow government that works the puppet strings. America needs to cut these ties and break out of its stupor to understand that we are HATED because of the decision making of our government’s leaders. Islam is antichrist to our Christian beliefs, period. Islam is here to instruct us that “God is not a father and that he has no son”. The Bible states that “who is antichrist…he that denies the Father and the Son,…”

  4. this people in middle east they need to loosen up their obsessions about God, Because God never demand to kill in his name. Maybe their leader Obsessed to kill the people in their self interest, Not in God interest. We should not welcome their law into our law, Because they have crocked law we have Genius Law and the best system We don’t need to listen with their Advised from Barbaric people. That until now they can’t even comprehend the word of God. Middle east Before Jesus was born their country already at war. Until now still At war. Is that tell us Something?

  5. For all our sakes Listen to Col West—Islam is NOT a religion as we understand it, it is a Total way of life. The Koran MUST be followed as written. You are either a total believer or a Non Believer, non believers are to be put to death or enslaved, black or white NO inbetween. It is the DUTY of EVERY Muslim to spread Islam until it emcompasses the entire world & Sharia Law is the Law of the Land. The Koran further directs that it is alright to lie, “Taqiyya” to your enemies to further the cause of Islam.

  6. I am terrified for our country. The Obama Administration is destorying this Nation incrementally and with impunity. There are few options open to Republicans as long as Harry Reid controls the Senate. Career politicians have lost sight of why they are in Washington, they have no concept of what is happening in the real world.

We are not a gobal society, we are the United States of America. Trying to accommodate a Muslim country ANY Muslim country is insanity. Islam is not a religion, it is a culture. A culture that has been war torn for THOUSANDS of years. We are not going to change them. All we have to do is look to Afghanistan, it’s been 12 years…the Taliban is back and becoming ever stronger. Fundamentally, the mindset of Islamist is never going to change. Making nice with Iran is pretty much handing them the middle east on a silver platter.

  7. Almost by definition, religious fundamentalists or zealots are incapable of good faith negotiations, which are seen by them as collaborating with the enemy. Are there exceptions?

  8. Thanks again for another critically informative article, LTC West. What you wrote is not news, it is fact based on history in which some are doomed to repeat. And that is most unfortunate. Not necessarily for the ones repeating history but rather, the lives that their lack of ability and willingness to learn and understand history affect. In other words, obama and his regime’s selfishness and stupidity endangers us all and could even be considered a “global” crisis.

To mr. obama: You, sir, are a real az z wagon.

  9. Thank you Colonel West for your always helpful, and accurate information. It becomes more and more obvious that our lowly administration will back the wrong dog, on purpose. Look who is running the show.

  10. Every Muslim should confess that Islam is the code of terrorists or extremists, and U.s is the defender of peace ..Who just killed round about 0.150 million Muslims around the globe just bcz U.s the peace curator claimed that Usama Bin Ladan attempted the 9/11 attacks..I sounds good. No hypocracy..

  11. FYI: There are Muslims that are being targeted for persecution and death.
Those being targeted are the Shi’a and the Alawite. The ones targeting
them are the Wahhabi, Sunni and Shiite. (The hardest core Muslims). The
‘Ahmadiyya’ sect of Islam are being slaughtered in Malaysia, Indonesia
and Bangladesh..just to name a few. The Ahmadiyya are actually known
for being a peaceful and loving sect of Islam. They are a very
small sect of Islam and unfortunately getting smaller every day. Qasim Rashid has written : The Wrong Kind of Muslim: An Untold Story of Persecution & Perseverance. You can also read: The Islamic Solution to Stop Domestic Violence by Qasim Rashid
