Bob Costas and Mascots: Get a life

This past Sunday evening I was watching one of the NFL’s storied rivalry games, the Washington Redskins versus the Dallas Cowboys. Many are perplexed as to why there are so many Cowboys fans in Washington DC. The answer to that question is that early on the Dallas Cowboys had black football stars like Bob Hayes who were a symbol to many in the black community. Today, it is young Robert Griffin III (RG III) who has captured the hearts of so many in the DC area and across the country.

It was an exciting game in the first half and a thrilling atmosphere. I was looking forward to the second half until I was treated to sports commentator Bob Costas’ inappropriate political rant about the Washington DC football team mascot name, the Redskins. Costas obviously felt it necessary to engage, since President Obama did the same. You know, I sure wish Obama would engage on something important, like economic growth policies. I’m quite worn down by these elitist liberals who define offensive words or actions to us — the same folks who felt Nidal Hasan committed “workplace violence.” These highly enlightened people seek to tell us that we are hurting people, but is that really the case?

I grew up in Atlanta and our baseball team is the “Braves.” I remember Chief Noc-a-Homa and his teepee out in center field and the dance he would do when the Braves hit a home run. No one was concerned about the offense of the Chief, we were all just happy a home run was hit and wanted the Braves to win. This past weekend I watched the Texas A&M Aggies take on the Ole Miss Rebels…oops! “Rebels” — could that be deemed as offensive since it relates to those who fought for the confederacy during the Civil War? Heck, I went to the University of Tennessee and our “Volunteers” relates to the Tennesseans who volunteered to fight alongside the Texans in the Mexican War. Perhaps groups like La Raza will claim offense and our mascot will no longer dress like Davy Crockett but like a hospital volunteer?

You have to wonder, where does this end? Actually, my question is simple, “Why don’t you people get a doggone life? It’s just a game and stop trying to make us miserable like you.”

I have always been a Redskins fan. I love our team song, which is sung with pride and honor. How dare Costas judge me and tell me what MY intentions are?! My son and grandson are fans as well. I am a member of WOW, Women of the Washington Redskins, and proud of it!

Why is it that Bob Costas has been calling them the Washington Redskins for over 30 years, but only NOW it bothers him? I want sports updates during half time, not lectures by a judgmental sportscaster.

Hail to the Redskins!

The issues that people worry about are so incredibly ridiculous! Next thing you know, large people will be complaining about the NY Giants name.

I think Redskins is an awesome name. Implies “fierce” and “warrior” – all good qualities of strong men who are working together effectively in battle… It’s “Washington” that needs be removed from the name…

While I’ve long appreciated Costas’s professionalism and insight into sporting events and feature stories on athletes, his rant was completely out of place and self-aggrandizing. Fans tune in to games to watch football, not political op-ed. Stick to your night job, Bob, and report on the sport itself; chuck any commentary you may have on the latest “feel-good” trend into the recycle bin.

For the liberals it never ends. There will always be something else that “offends” their delicate sensibilities. They claim to love America but they keep trying to change it into something unrecognizable. I think they actually hate America and everything this great nation stands for. Sure seems like it.

Well said as always Allen. Perhaps I should feel guilty for being a Packers fan! After all, the origin of their name may be offensive to vegans/vegetarians. Meat Packers do not represent every member of their fan base.Come to think of it…didn’t cowboys kill Indians in our history?? Shouldn’t all Americans be offended by the Cowboys name? Okay…enough sarcasm for one post. 🙂

I’m sorry, I’m going to say this; Bob Costas is a little girly and quite a hypocrite to boot! He is why I cannot stomach liberals…

Who is Bob Costas anyways? The liberals have their talking points and he is a cog in the machine. A majority of indian tribes support the name “Redskins” and the meaning behind it. In a Republic the majority rule, and last i checked it is not illegal to offend an extreme minority! Liberals are never worried about offending their political enemies, but the moment they are offended it is deemed “hate” speech. I pray that Dan Snyder stays strong during this storm. Hail to the Redskins!!!!!!!!!

There is only one word to describe Bob Costas and that word is “Creepy.” I could call him a plastic surgeon’s horror story, a little shrimp, a worm or a guy who just wants to service Obama, but I won’t go there. I do have one question for Ol’ Bob though. Bob, how come the name, Redskins, never bothered you enough to mention it until now? Before it became the issue of the moment, Bob, you had no problem with it. Whatcha doin’ old buddy, angling for some “insider” slot-machine action at one of those Indian run casinos?
